The putty-announce mailing list is discontinued

This is the former page describing the putty-announce mailing list, where we sent out email announcements of new PuTTY releases. That mailing list is now no longer used. PuTTY 0.85 was the last release announced by email.

We have a replacement announcement mechanism in the form of an RSS feed. See the new Updates page for details.

We withdrew the putty-announce mailing list because email announcements were causing us too much inconvenience:

• Many people would delete or discontinue an email address, forgetting they had subscribed. Every release, we had a large amount of admin to do, collecting all the bounce messages and manually unsubscribing defunct addresses.
• Some people would subscribe an address to putty-announce which linked directly to their organisation's IT ticketing system, so that a ticket was automatically created to roll out the updated PuTTY in the organisation. Then we got all the ticket updates CCed to us.
• Worst of all, some of the defunct email addresses still subscribed to the list had been turned into spamtraps by the domain's owner. (Presumably a standard policy after an employee has been gone for a while.) This led to us being accused of emitting spam.

So, we're sorry to have to do it, but we're not announcing releases by email any more. It cost us work, and now (with these spam traps) it's costing us reputation as well, and that's too much.

For historical interest, here's the list information and subscription page, still containing the list archives of old release announcements. But there is no point in trying to subscribe to this list any more.
